- General Instructions:
Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be slightly tender for several days as a result of manipulation during treatment and previous condition of your tooth. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm. Do not chew food on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed and your tooth is covered with a protective restoration provided by your restorative dentist. You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen. Discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil), aspirin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed.

Alcohol intake is not advised while taking any of these medications. Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above listed medications, or should swelling develop, please contact this office immediately. The office telephone is answered day and night. If you need to call after hours, please have your pharmacy number available.

- After Completion of Endodontic Treatment:
Endodontic treatment has now been completed. The root canal system has been permanently sealed. However, the outer surface is sealed with a temporary restoration. A follow-up restoration must be placed within 2 weeks to protect your tooth against fracture and decay. Please telephone your restorative dentist for an appointment. A complete report of treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. Please call for a follow-up appointment 6 months after treatment at no additional fee.

- After Completion of Endodontic Surgery:

SURGICAL POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS
- Your local anesthesia should last about three (3) hours.
- The surgical area has been closed with; Silk or Gut sutures.
The Gut suture will resorb (dissolve) in 7 to 10 days. The Silk suture will have to be removed at your post-op visit in 5 to 7 days from the day of surgery.
- For proper healing it is advised that you observe the following
A. For DENTAL EXTRACTIONS do not rinse with anything other than plain water and do so very gently to preserve the forming blood clot. DO NOT RINSE AT ALL FOR AT LEAST THREE HOURS. Loss of the forming blood clot will usually result in a "dry socket" which is quite painful. Therefore, do not rinse or spit forcefully.
B. For ENDODONTIC SURGERY you may rinse somewhat more freely (with water only). Apply ice wrapped in something (hand towel, ice bag) to your face over the surgical and/or extraction site area for 20 MINUTES ON AND 20 MINUTES OFF FOR ABOUT 3 HOURS.
C. If your surgical site has been closed with GUT SUTURES it is very important that you DO NOT place any paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, facial tissues) or gauze over the surgical area because these materials will adhere to the gut sutures and possibly break the suture material when removed. You may eat your normal diet at any time, just eat on the opposite side and keep food away from the surgical area.
D. Maintain your normal oral hygiene habits, but stay off the surgical area until after your post-op visit.
