I V Sedation

Moderate Sedation/Analgesia ("Conscious Sedation") is a drug-induced depression of consciousness during which patients respond purposefully... to verbal commands, either alone or accompanied by light tactile stimulation. No interventions are required to maintain a patent airway, and spontaneous ventilation is adequate. Cardiovascular function is usually maintained.

Conscious Sedation Root Canal
This procedure is as follows:

  1. The patient is seated and vital signs are recorded.
  2. Monitoring equipment is connected.
  3. An intravenous line is started. Typically at the back of the hand or the fold of the arm.
  4. Sedation is started with the drug Demerol and maintained with the drug Versed.
  5. Endodontic procedure is performed.
  6. Patient is disconnected and dismissed with a responsible individual.
  7. There is complete amnesia of the entire event.

Some patients with a phobia of dentistry referrer to this as painless dentistry.
